Unlicensed Sierra Vista Individual
Pleads No Contest to Identity Theft
PHOENIX, Ariz., (December 21, 2018) –On December 12, 2018, Raynaldo Morales Lopez, 63 of Sierra Vista, pleaded no contest to Taking Identity of Another, a Class 4 Felony and Advertising Without a License, a Class 1 Misdemeanor.
The case submitted for prosecution stems from an AZ ROC investigation finding that Raynaldo dba AAA Quality Work for Less, contracted-for $4,000 to do landscaping and exterior repairs to a Sierra Vista home. After paying $3,000, the homeowner received poor work and inferior materials. Lopez “credited” the homeowner $1,000 for not finishing on time and for items not completed.
The homeowner found Lopez via an ad on Thumbtack.com that did not disclose his unlicensed status. Upon asking for his license number, he provided the homeowner with the number of a licensed contractor; NIU Construction, claiming it as his own. According to NIU Construction, Lopez has never worked for them and has no affiliation.
The conditions of the plea deal include a fine of $1,830 and $4,300 in restitution to the homeowner. A sentencing hearing, though, is set for February 25, 2018 at Cochise County Superior Court.
The AZ ROC commonly receives complaints where an unlicensed entity either makes up a license number or uses the number of a licensed contractor. The AZ ROC reminds homeowners to always verify the person you are negotiating your project with is an authorized representative of the licensed contractor by calling the contractor’s number listed on the ROC license record. You can find the ROC license record by visiting roc.az.gov or calling 602-542-1525.
